The U.S. Trade Representative's annual list of the biggest intellectual-property offenders has been revealed and Russia, China, and India are fighting for number one. The report highlights the intense need for stricter piracy protection in not only these three countries but many others as well, including Israel, Algeria, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, Ukraine and Venezuela. The article discusses the issue of online piracy and how modern technologies such as streaming bandwidth have made it even easier to rip off music, movies, etc. In fact, online piracy is surpassing the level of piracy from vendors selling actual hard copies of pirated material. The drivers of this survey are hoping that the release of these findings, along with the public shame attached, will motivate world leaders, especially those of the top three countries, to crack down on piracy within their own governments. The survey from the U.S. Trade Representative is just that, a survey, and there are no formal actions or punishments that can be made. Foreign piracy is a really big issue, especially when our world is becoming so digitized and everything is readily at your fingertips. I personally have used a website originated from a foreign country to watch television shows or movies for free that haven't been released yet. The reach of the internet is not immune to criminals and with such new technologies come more new risks.

Just let them Text! How 9 out of 10 people say they should be allowed to text in movie theaters.

by Nicole Tawney

We see this problem every time we go to the theaters, people are glued to their smart phones, texting and using applications, while the rest of the theater is attempting to watch the film. A recent study conducted by Penn Schoen Berland for The Hollywood Reporter, revealed that people between the ages of 18-34, regard social media to be the new form oh how we as a society consume entertainment. "The poll found that a majority of 18-to-34-year-olds believe using social media while watching a movie in a theater would add to their experience, and nearly half would be interested in going to theaters that allowed texting and web surfing." Twitter and Facebook were among the top social media sites that people visited while in theaters, many claiming that the information shared on these particular sites actually encouraged them to want to see a particular movie. The poll also found that people would frequent movies and find the movie experience more enjoyable if theaters would have sections of seats just for people who want to use social or even entire theaters dedicated to the movie-social media experience. This is an example of how one form of media, texting and using social media on smart phones, is influencing another media, film, in a way that could change how people go to the movies forever. I actually think it would be a good idea to have entire theaters just for those who feel the need to text and surf Facebook while watching a movie, because it means that people who do not do that, like myself, will find their movie experience better without having to battle the person next to them to stop texting.
