The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen: The Heroine the World Needs Right Now
By: Kelly Kauffman

Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of The Hunger Games trilogy, faces a greater challenge than just the other tributes in the Hunger Games, she also has to fight the box office. If the movie comes out as a success, it will be evidence to prove that people are willing to see a female hero in action movie. With superhero movies dominated by males, Katniss will fight to break down gender stereotypes by not being the love interest to a male main character or being featured as a sex symbol. This could provide a trend for other movies featuring a stronger, female lead. I think that this is important on a social level as well because it breaks down the stereotypes of what men and women want to see on screen and by the predicted numbers, it seems that Katniss will have no problem smashing box office numbers this week. By the amount of movie-goers who have already paid for the midnight showing and more to come the following day, it will be interesting to see if The Hunger Games will begin a trend or just plainly making it easier for women to star in more action type movies instead of typecasting them into romantic/sex roles. For now, I predict that it will indicate how a series like this can appeal to various demographics and studios should be paying attention to see how tastes are changing.

'Hunger' boosts Lionsgate stock again

by: Alexis Rangel

Since ‘The Hunger Games’ is being released this Friday, I found an interesting article about the film. The much anticipated film is so huge that it was able to boost LionsGate stock even before the actual release date. The studio company, LionsGate, is expecting to see an increase in profits for eight of their 15 future projects, which they are anticipating will increase their stock. The eight future films LionsGate expects to do are expected to have more branding properties, which tend to do better than non-branded films.

This article is particularly important on an economic level; if studios invested a little more time effectively marketing their films perhaps then they would see better profits at the box office. Marketing doesn’t necessarily have to be super expensive, take social media for example. I am pretty sure the fact that ‘The Hunger Games’ utilized social media to market the film, helped to sell so many pre-sale tickets. Besides with other countries trying to come in and profit off of our entertainment industry, (such as China, Japan, etc.) I think it is extremely important that we try to be the best at making and marketing our film industry so that the film industry here in the United States profits more than loses. It will be interesting to see if simply branding properties help the profit of a film, and if so will we see other studios in the future focus on this aspect as well.

The Amazing Spider-Man Launches Viral Campaign
By: Clarissa Hanna

The clever minds behind the upcoming film The Amazing Spider-Man launched a few days ago a viral campaign with the website WebbedMenace.com (http://webbedMenace.com/)
The new Spider-Man film does not come out till July 2012, however, to get their fan base (or anyone interested in the film) excited till then, Sony launched an interactive website just for them.
This new viral campaign website urges citizens to come forward with any evidence of the masked menace. The site asks fans to email photos from any sort of Spider-Man sighting (which they will have created on their own), and will offer a gallery of the best fan-made scenes. The site also provides a telephone number that they can call.
WebbedMenace also features a video of NYPD captain George Stacy, played by the real actor in the movie, Denis Leary, whining over this masked menace that calls himself a hero.
Keeping faithful to the movie's fans, the clip appears to be filmed by The Daily Bugle, the newspaper helmed by spider-hater J. Jonah Jameson.
This "fake" spotting of the NYPD Wanted Spider-Man is a great opportunity for people to get into the action themselves. It is a fun, interactive way to build suspense for this crime fighting summer film.

Your Hanover ends here! News just broke that the third installment of the Hanover series will be the last. Although it is not released where the third movie will take place, rumors speculate that it may be based out of Los Angeles. Director Todd Phillips stated, "It will be a fitting conclusion to our three-part opera of mayhem, despair and bad decisions." Shocker. Although vague descriptions there is concrete news that the third installment will revolve around breaking Zach Galifianakis’ character Alan out of a mental institution. Joining Zach in the cast will of course include Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms who are supposedly going to be receiving quite a sizeable paycheck for the feature film, $15 million that is. The movies so far have racked in over $1billion and even gave the Saw series a run for their money. Start counting down the days till May 24th…2013 that is!
