FTC: Apps for Kids Get Poor Grades for Privacy By Cecilia Kang
As more of the youth and teens continue to download applications for entertainment and educational purposes, application developers are picking up the popular demographic and are targeting them the most. The Federal Trade Commission has sparked great interest concerning children's privacy on downloading and using mobile phone applications. A survey was conducted by the FTC which showed that many parents are unaware of the data that is being collected and used by their children. Most of the unawareness is partly due to the fact that app stores and app developers have failed to provide parents with privacy agreements needed in order to protect their children's privacy. Mobile phones have the capability to track your geographical location, phone number, call logs and list of contacts and this can be detrimental to children's safety, especially if the apps being downloaded aren't used correctly. Of course, adults understand how to download and use mobile apps but children may not. This is a great step that the FTC is taking considering the rapid transition of mobile media usage. The children are the future and its our duty to protect them.

Early March Seen As Launching Point For iPad 3, Likely With LTE Article
Rumors that iPad 3 is coming soon!
New iPad 3!
Interestingly enough, Apple Inc. discuss creating a new tablet iPad 3 after two years when the first iPad was released. The company is considering ideas for creating a smaller version of an iPad. Rumors are spreading that the company will introduce their new smaller tablet iPad 3 on March 7th. If the iPad 3 was released to the public, it would have a higher-resolution screen with a more powerful processor. In addition, the new tablet would be able to operate on AT&T and Verizon’s LTE (Long-Term Evolution) networks. In making improvements to their tablet technology, Apple Inc. plans on resolving the increased battery drain on their current tablets by replacing their small batteries with bigger batteries. In the process, a longer-lasting battery might create a faster LTE connection than the broadband that consumers use in their area. As technology especially the iPad progresses, the mobile industries such as Apple Inc. will develop innovations for smaller sized computers with a faster network connection.
Absolutely, the production for creating iPads will completely change the mobile industry as they become smaller. As of now, the current iPad has a standard size but once the supposedly rumored iPad 3 comes out in the future it will be an 8-inch screen device with a higher-resolution screen (screen quality) because small, draining batteries will be replaced with a larger battery. In terms of distribution, consumers will be anxious to purchase a new iPad due to a better power source and they are always looking for the newest technological innovation in the market. Making way for a new profit idea, it would be understandable that Apple Inc. is creating the new iPad 3 in order to bring in revenues. Economically, creating a smaller iPad 3 would enable the company to sell their new tablets at low costs and force other industries such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble to compete against their great prices. In reality, the company is having trouble creating a small iPad and bringing in high revenues because cheaper tablets are reducing the demand for iPads. Even though making innovations to iPad technology is important to boosting the mobile media industry, the possibility of creating a fast paced, small tablet with no connection problems at a low price seems unrealistic.

Mobile Apps Take Data Without Permission by Nicole Perlroth and Nick Bilton Original Article
Smartphone users must be aware that their address book (and some of their other personal data) are being taken by app developers without the users’ knowledge. Some of these smartphone apps are: Twitter, Foursquare, Instagram, Path, and Hipster. Apple and Google are trying to fix this problem by making all apps ask the users first before collecting their information. I hope people take some time to read the terms and agreements (conditions) before downloading apps, especially if they have sensitive information.
It’s also interesting that app developers are concerned about informing people that their person information are being collected, but not working on completely eliminating privacy violating. Have we really come to a time when privacy no longer exists? It sure does seem so.
There must be some sort of balance between being able to use apps and being able to keep personal information private. Before this happens though, users must be informed. Nothing will change unless the users are well informed about the technology they are using.

Instagram Offers Posters, Retro-Style by: Lorien Crow Original Article
The Instagram logo
Instagram, a popular photo application released just two years ago, now has over 12 million users, including the President of the United States Barack Obama and is one of the most successful applications for iPhone and iPad. What is this application that has gained such a high user base in two short years? It allows users to enhance their photos with 16 various filters, with features ranging from sepia-tint, to cropping, to using different camera lenses. In the United Kingdom users can buy pictures from Instagram and turn them into 24 inch posters mailed directly to them. In the United States, “Printstagram” offers the same service and additionally users can print stickers and mini books.
Instagram offers photo-editing and capturing abilities were once very expensive and thus only used by professionals. Consumers enjoy the user-friendliness and convenience Instagram brings to digital photography, but also appreciate the retro appeal of the photos, as shown by the popularity of other applications such as Hipstamatic. Hipstamatic is similar to Instagram, although it is not free, allows users to change the film, flash, and camera lens all on their iPhone or iPad camera. Instagram has started to connect with other companies allowing users to turn their photos into anything from hardcover photo books to customized iPhone cases. Instagram is also linked with social media platforms Facebook and Twitter and allows users to instantly share their photos and collages online. Instagram even has a social network of their own, users share their photos with followers and get updates from people they are following.
Instagram is a revolution in photography and art. Camera lenses and photo editing software can costs hundreds of dollars, and then the user must learn how to use these products. Instagram is free, gives users tons of possibilities for editing and capturing their photos from a smartphone and it is easy to use. Additionally, when taking traditional photos one has to upload them onto a computer, edit, and then share, Instagram gives users the ability to capture, edit, and share with all their friends and followers with a single click of a button. The other services offered by Instagram of printing photos, posters, books, stickers, etc. simplify production and give users the ability to instantly publish their art. Instagram is another application that heightens the omnipresent move towards user-generated content and with downloads occurring at speeds of 100,000 per day I think this application will continue to grow.
Tired of not being able to find the remote control for you TV? No Problem! Nowadays, you have an alternative. Canal Digital TV Remote Control turns your iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch into a remote control for Canal Digital’s new HD PVR for satellite network. This is just one remote control app that uses technology that will most definitely expand possibilities for smartphone users and app creators.
StoneFace Media has created an app that allows users with a browser to turn any smartphone into a smart TV. Using a QR code, the Clik App allows users to pair any smartphone device with a flash-capable browser. Users are able to play YouTube videos, and other flash-driven videos on the screen using their smartphone as the remote control.
Apple's airplay technology, which allows users to watch and control YouTube videos with their keyboards, was a pioneer for this technology. Mobile Media App creators have taken this idea, by integrating our smart phones into the remote control mix. In fact, the Clik App allows multiple users to sync to a single device and control videos simultaneously. Furthermore, this "now generation technology" will almost never give you any frustrating lag time. While the control works through a 3G network, the secondary device can run on wifi.
What's next for this technology? "Game developers could use the technology to create multiplayer titles that can then be played on larger displays, and streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu could use it to turn people's smartphone into a remote control for their services." No more expensive X box controllers and $1 redbox movies. With this technology, their is much expansion to come in the mobile, gaming, and movie markets.
