Social Media Helps Grammys Achieve Huge Ratings in Broadcast and Social TV

While the ratings for the Grammys were the best since 1984 and the second-largest Grammy audience with 39.9 million viewers, it was the social media that was one of the main stories. The Grammys earned 13 million social comments during the night even with the tape delay between the East and West coast. It even broke the record for the social comments that occurred during the Super Bowl (12.2 million). The numbers are astounding when you consider last year there were only 546 thousand social media comments during the awards. The impact that social media has had on even entertainment is amazing. Compared to other entertainment events in social TV, the Grammys demolished the number of social media comments of its competitors such as the MTV Video Music awards which only counted 3.1 million social media comments this past August. CBS initiated Grammy Live which users of iphones and ipads could give a second screen experience such as behind the scenes. A company called NetBase was able to run an analysis on the sentiment of the comments coming in from Twitter about the show. Adele and LLCoolJ were among the highest overall sentiment, while Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj were not so fortunate. Also, the tribute to Whitney Houston was 73% of positive sentiment while the other 26% was negative, but by negative the company means it was not of hate or dislike, but representative of sadness. These statistics are important because they help show how much of an impact social media has become in everyday life and how quickly it is growing. From 546 thousand to 13 million in a one year span is amazing. Social Media will be around for quite a while seeing the impact it has and its ability to communicate to the consumer.

Adoption by Facebook Gains Favor

Facebook reports it has 483 Million active users as of Decemeber 2011. As many people may be able to figure out, this is a much larger audience than the average newspaper or adoption agency is capable of reaching. As a result of this more and more couples are using Social media channels like Facebook and Youtube as a way of looking for a child to adopt. The reason this makes it easier for couples is they are able to reach a much greater audience in a shorter time and even able to ask questions prior formal meeting which saves all parties time. The significance of this new way of thinking about adoption is that it means more and more pople are realizing the power and capabilities of Social Media websites and channels. Social Media website have the ability to reach millions of people with the touch of a few buttons. From an advertising stand point this is the definition of advertising in the 21st Century. A person makes an ad, like one for looking for a surrogate mother to provide a child for adoption, and it is made available for the world to see. Anyone who is not interested is able to opt out of the ad while anyone interested is able to continue and pursue the advertisement if they are interested in becoming a surrogate mother.

Thril-lin, Lin-sanity, Lin-sational and Lin-credible, how did an American Born Chinese NBA player became an overnight sensation?

So now everyone probably has heard of Lin and his Cinderella story in this age of rapid social media. He was rejected by two NBA teams after being undrafted last year and about to be cut by his third team the New York Knicks. Luckily because of injuries of Knicks super star starters, Lin got his shot and he stunned the whole world with 25 points in his first NBA start. And since then led the Knicks to seven straight wins. He brought life and excitement back to the sports of professional basketball. Jeremy Lin’s inspirational story of an underdog becoming a superstar has crossed beyond the cultural and racial boundaries.

With the help of social media, the Lin-sanity exploded like wild fire. Jeremy Lin’s Twitter followers has grown tenfold and counting. He has more mentions on Twitter than LeBron James. Some of Jeremy Lin’s videos on Youtube have surpassed 2.5 million views. He is currently on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Lin’s autograph soared from $29 to $1500 on eBay. Jeremy Lin has become the fastest growing athletic brand that’s worth 14 million and climbing.

The pressure will continue to build as each game that Lin plays with the New York Knicks. Everybody enjoy Jeremy Lin’s incredible story because somewhere in there, they can relate. People like stories of triumph and about an average guy becoming a hero and saves the day.

Companies to Put Price on Personal Data?

How would you feel if your personal data could be compartmentalized into different categories and sold t advertising companies? There is a company, founded by Shane Green, called Personal that is making some noise among social networks. The company has not found a new landmark way to find new personal data from users. Personal wants to become the first company to monopolize this personal information. The idea is to create a series of data vaults, which contain an abundance amount of information about its users. Then they would market the “vaults” to advertising companies, charging a set price for certain data. For example, last year a firm devised a pricing plan for each of the following: a unique user to Facebook could be worth $4 and specific Google info could be worth as much as $24. However, companies like Personal are not the only ones trying to sell user information for profit. Mint.com has already experienced a growth by allowing users to trade specific privacy information for financial advice. I could never see myself trading information about myself to a stranger for advice on how to save or spend money (maybe it is because I do not have any money). I understand that our privacy is being compromised a little each day at a time and would be a little more comforting to know that our information is set in one locker, however, that gift-wrapped security is a thing of the past. How much will our own personal financial records be worth and what could they do if sold to the wrong company? These are some of the questions I have for the company Personal. It will be interesting to see if these companies take off and if they can monopolize the information age about specific users. Stay tuned…

Internet memes seem to flourish in the 21st Century because the emergence of social networking sites like Twtitter and Facecbook. For college students, the use of social networking has been an obsession. While social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are using hash tags to relate to their audience, Internet Memes are using a different and unique style to connect to users. In fact, Internet Memes are humorous, as well as an extensive form of propaganda that use a wide range of videos, pictures, or blogs to display their message. The purpose of an Internet meme is to not only connect to an audience, but to hopefully influence web users. On college campuses, Internet memes are being extensively popular. These memes are specifically related to campus events, and represent a sarcastic sense of humor to particular occasions that happen on campus. Most of the time memes use jokes to attract to a college student. The jokes create “buzz,” for college students. The term buzz allows student’s to give feedback, comment, and like different memes that they find appealing. Internet Memes provide students the chance for student to socially interact. The consumption of Internet Memes are rapidly growing amongst college campuses especially Facebook. Through social networking like Facebook, Student’s are able to go to their particular university, and “like” the page. For example, a Facebook user has to like SDSU Meme page first, before they can be informed on the comical blogs, videos, and pictures the site offers. In this era, it is relevant that social interaction is a necessity to stay connected with the rest of the world. Due to social networking, Internet memes actually impact and influence many college students on a controversial, and comical topics.
