Job Applicant Privacy And Social Media

With FaceBook growing to over 845 active users which shows an increase of 45 million in only the last three months, it’s hard to picture social media taking a fall anytime soon. Despite these growing numbers and though that social media is still booming, there actually are many issues which test the boundaries of social media. As great as social media is at exposing yourself to all your friends, job suppliers are getting more and more social media savvy, and involved in the social media lives of their job candidates. Some candidates even report being asked for a FaceBook user name and password at the job interview. While social media has made it easier to get hired in the sense of pairing a job with a job seeker, it has also made it much easier for a job seeker to be rejected from that same job he or she just found seeing as sites like E-recruitment now make it a common practice to look at not only the private profile made on the site but supplying the potential hirer with access to the candidates FaceBook and or twitter. Putting the massive growth numbers aside, many social media sites are actually starting to lose many of their current users as a result of privacy issues. Any other threat to a user’s privacy in regards to job searchers may hurt the social media growth even more.
Facebook, social media’s Hercules bought Instagram for $1 billion dollars this past week. A reason being, Instagram happens to be the easiest, and most efficient way of sharing photos. Also, the free application allows a user to upload photos with different filters, and publish them for the public to see. The idea seams quite simple, but Facebook believes that Instagram will be the new way to share, process, and upload pictures.
Why is Instagram such a hit?
Late night hosts like Steve Colbert commented on Instagrams outrageous revenue. A reason being, the free application created one of the biggest emergences that media has ever seen. In the first week it attracted 200,000 users, following 1.7 and concluding with now 4 million. Now the application has generated a revenue of $1 billion dollars. People obsess over Instagram because it allows you to share, filter, process, and view pictures; where the quick and easy photo processor will provide an immense asset to social networking. Instead of putting a disk into your computer and uploading pictures, Instgram allows a user to load them to Facebook in a matter of seconds via internet. Also, the general public is now able to process photos in a matter instantly, rather than using photoshop, iphoto or other photo processing applications. Photo editing is tedious. Instagram saves time by using filters to make pictures look black and white, vintage, or illuminated. Instagram is more application, it creates the possibility that the most simplistic ideas can become a phenomenon.
The number one social media website Facebook has recently acquired a mobile app company Instagram for a cool billion dollars. Facebook in turn will receive 13 employees and 30 million active users of Instagram. Instagram is a popular startup company who produced a popular iPhone app that allows users to upload and share photos. And the amazing thing is Instagram barely launched in Oct of 2010. The acquisition took place only a day after the company released the Google Android version of the app, and hit one million downloads in the first 12 hours. As of July 2011, Instagram announced that 100 million photos had been uploaded to its service, and that grew to 150 million in just one month later. Facebook’s move just months before the company is going public with its IPO will boost its portfolio for investors, and allow the company to be competitive in the popular mobile photo sharing trend. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Instagram will continue to operate as an independent service from Facebook. It will keep the compatibility to share on Facebook’s rival social media networks. This reminiscent what Google did with Youtube.
So why would Facebook dish up 1 billion dollars for a company that just recently venture capitaled to be worth $500 million dollars? Nowadays big players in the tech world could easily say “if you can’t fight them, buy them.” Move like Facebook’s basically eliminate the competition and may possibility turn it into revenue. Similar moves made by social network gaming company Zynga buying competitor OMGPOP. Facebook’s smart strategies have proven itself not to take the road where Friendster and Myspace end up. Facebook have acquired companies that may help build or pose threat with fast growing user base like Gowalla, Beluga, Hot Potato and FriendFeed.
If you watch the 2:31 video above you will just as curios and confused as I was. Can Google really make glasses that hold the key to your social life, among many other things? After researching if these glasses are in fact a reality or one of Google’s amazing technological pranks (Google Touch), I have found out that they in fact exist today; however not as perfect as they seem above. These glasses can act as an extension of your cellular phone and act in ways we cannot imagine. I would find it humorous to see a bunch of people walking around with glasses talking to themselves. If these glasses became a hit over the next few years, our society could become even more remote. I do not think it would have a huge effect on society becoming more isolated, however, some individuals would lose much of their social skills.
The first question I have, as a consumer, is what will the cost be for these “life-changing” glasses? Do I need a prescription? Blair MacIntyre of Gadget Lab magazine had an interesting comment regarding the Google Glasses, “In one simple fake video, Google has created a level of over-hype and over-expectation that their hardware cannot possibly live up to.” I tend to agree with Blair because I have begun to become skeptic of any new product that offers life altering answers. Many consumers have already complained about the lack of use of Siri on the new 4s, and I think many of the features of the glasses are overrated. I would not enjoy putting on glasses to drink my coffee and tell me the weather outside; I would just use my phone for which I pay $30.00 a month. This is a very new and interesting concept, I am enthralled to see the responses (12 million hits on YouTube) in the upcoming months and years.
