Basketball Coach's Halftime Tweets a New Take on Mid Game Interviews (Article)

By Britta Erickson

This week I came across an article on Mashable that was about the head coach of Colorado State's Men's Basketball team tweeting at halftime during a game against UNLV. What is interesting about this article is that the writer proposes that this tweet was a way for Coach Miles to avoid doing a mid game interview. Traditionally in sports that have intermissions, players and coaches are interviewed by field reporters asking them about their thoughts and feelings regarding the game so far. The Mashable writer asks, what if more coaches followed in Miles' footsteps and tweeted instead of giving an on camera interview? Would the job of the field reporter in the case become extinct eventually? So far, Coach Miles is the only know coach in sports that utilizes social media in lieu of an interview, but it raises some interesting questions.

This article is a perfect example of how social media is changing the traditional way of reporting and even threatening people's jobs. If these mid game tweets become the norm, many reporters will have to find other things to report on or try to adapt to the changes and create a new way to report with them. Social Media is become more and more prominent in the sports world and this is just another example of how people are trying to evolve with the technological changes. It will be interesting to see if this is just a isolated incident or if it catches on. Also, it will be interesting to see if the leagues and associations, such as the NCAA, try to put rules and regulations with these mid game tweets. The NHL already has a new rule that players are not allowed to tweet two hours before and two hours after games. What will other leagues and organizations do in response to in-game usage of social media? This is definitely an area to keep an eye on.

Nick Young's over the Backboard

By: Kaitlyn Garcia

This video is of Nick Young and his attempt to hit a wide open layup. As you begin to watch the video it is clear that Nick Young has a wide open shot to the net yet in a rush over enthusiasm and excitement he completely misses the hoop and sends the ball over the backboard completely. Nick Young has been criticized for much of this season for not being able to play defense, now he's getting flack for not being able to make a wide open shots. Many sports analysts don't see the value in him as a player because he's weak on defense and overly confident on offense. Many people are now bashing his missed opportunity on twitter but the only person defending him is a local blogger from Washington and said that while he made some over confident decisions on offense his defense seemed to be improving. The incline of social media and regular media hype players are now analyzed from every angle. Even if they make one mistake, it makes critics questions their viability as a player. It makes people wonder why are athletes getting paid so much money when they can't even hit an open layup that my six year little sister could.

Michigan Tweets Might be Issue (Article)

By Matt Lewis

This article talks about a possible NCAA Violation against The University of Michigan football team because of the actions of two of it's student athletes of their twitter accounts. Roy Roundtree and Kenny Demens sent out tweets congratulating a high profile recruit for choosing to play for Michigan. NCAA rules prohibit messages sent to recruits from social media accounts affiliated with someone from the school. A similar instance happened recently a Notre Dame, when a player sent a tweet to a recruit just before an official recruiting trip. That matter is still under investigation. As for Michigan, they are already on probation because of illegal practices held under a previous coach, so this could mean big trouble for a national powerhouse.

In this years Honda Classic, Rory Mcilroy earned the title of the number one player in golf. Despite this tremendous accomplishment, it seems as if the media is buzzing over, the one and only, Tiger Woods. Woods shot a 62 in the same round that named McIlroy number 1, making this Woods' new record. When the spotlight should be on McIlroy, Tiger seems to have stolen the show. The news is running with talk about "Are we finally seeing the old Tiger Woods?". After Woods' personal life took a turn for the worse and was plastered on the front pages of every newspaper and magazine, we also saw his golf career spindle down as well. Although Tiger has not been playing at his potential these past years, he still remains one of the world's top golfers, with records that blow competitors out of the water. So when an athlete as prolific as Tiger beats his record, and is possibly making a comeback...it's BIG news. With Tiger placing second and McIlroy in first, the golf world is curious to see what this upcoming year has in store.Tiger is proud to have come in second, beating his personal record, and McIlroy is as honored as can be to be ranked the top golfer in the world, but knows he has tough competition. McIlroy stated, ''It was always a dream of mine to become the worlds No. 1 and the best player in the world or whatever you want to call it,I didn't know what I would be able to get here this quickly. ... Hopefully, I can hold onto it for a little longer.''

Social media has really became a popularity among sports events. The NBA All Star Weekend just occurred in the last weekend of February. There are now over 240 million followers of social media globally, so it is super easy for sports fans to follow things directly from any social media site. The fans of the NBA All Star Weekend had access to direct news from the event, could follow tweets from some of their players, as well as following the All-star pulse to see what's going on in the moment. The NBA has even gained 40 million viewers on social networking sites in China alone, so to promote this All Star Weekend Worldwide is ideal. The Sprite Slam Dunk Contest also changed this year from having judges to having the fans vote on Twitter with the hashtag #spriteslam. Social media is changing the way everything is done.

Fans love to connect with their heroes and imagine they have some sort of connection to them, especially through the use of social media. The fact that the NBA All Star Weekend relied so heavily on social media shows its significance and just how important social media is. 240 million people are globally now using social media. It is now known that social media has had a great influence on sports and its athletes. But a sport that many people tend to overlook is the sport of NASCAR. Yes, not a lot of people enjoy watching cars driving around in circles for hours and only want to watch it if a crash occurs. But on February 27th NASCAR got a boost in its twitter fan base. After a crash occurred during the race, there was a two hour delay while crew cleaned up the wreckage. During this time however, Brad Keselowski's live tweets changed everything. NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski's social media presence isn't anything new proved this exact thing when he began tweeting this picture to his fans on Monday nights Daytona 500 race. Twitter nation blew up and this was the talk of the social media and sports world. Due to his picture tweet, his fan base grew from just over 60,000 to over 200,000 followers just in the span of a few days. This is an amazing thing and it just goes to show how big of an impact that sports athletes have not only on their fans but everyone that is somewhat obsessed with social media sites. The ESPN article stated,Higdon (@hignascar) said the night was a "watershed moment" for NASCAR's development of social media and fan interaction. "It shows the wide impact of the Daytona 500 and its fanbase. We're in a major stretch with social media that's blowing up. Our TV partners get it. Our athletes get it. We don't want to be trailing. We want to be leaders in this." I think its safe to say that with pictures like this, it is hard not to follow NASCAR.
