"Tebowing" and Manning to Denver Predicted By Twitter? (Article)
By Britta Erickson
After the news broke yesterday that Peyton Manning was most likely heading to Denver, the move and the potential fate of Tim Tebow were all over Twitter. This article that I found on Mashable discusses the history and future for the internet craze "tebowing" and there is also a small portion at the bottom of the page that discusses if this move was predicted by Twitter before it was announced.
As we all know, the phenomenon of "tebowing" was made popular by the Denver Broncos' young Quarterback Tim Tebow last fall. After seeing Tebow get down on his knees and thank God, a Broncos fan named Jared Kleinstein started to mimic this action and the art of "tebowing" was born. Kleinstein bought the rights to the domain name of tebowing.com so he and his friends could post pictures of themselves striking the pose in odd locations. Soon the nation caught on and they now have over 20,000 pictures from around the world on their site, including some from celebrities.
But if Tebow is traded to another team, will the craze live on? According to Kleinstein it will. The memes on the internet will be around for a while. As for his thoughts on his favorite player most likely being traded, Kleinstein said, "...I posted on my Facebook status this morning that it’s like getting divorced from the love of your life and eloping with a new hottie the same day.”
At the end of the article, the author discussed some statistics regarding Peyton Manning and Twitter between March 7th and the 18th. The number of times Manning was mentioned by or with the Broncos was 47,000 times. All the other teams were in the 30,000s or much lower. Because of these statistics, some speculate that Twitter predicted the move.
Whether it's used to promote an internet craze or predict trades and big deals, Twitter has definitely become a major part of sports media and it is a great source to use when trying to stay up to date with everything that is popular in the sports world.
Twitter goes Crazy after the signing of Peyton Manning to the Broncos (Article)
It's only March and the NFL has already stirred up a historic off season. With the signing of Peyton Manning to the Broncos, Tim Tebow to the Jets and the season long and no pay suspension for Payton Williams it has been quite the month of March. After news broke of the signing, almost instantly the news was erupting on twitter and everyone had something to say about it. In the article there are multiple tweets from people discussing their thoughts on the matter. It seemed that most people were excited about this move, but lets be honest I think we were all hoping that Manning would sign with our favorite team too. This historic move is going to be talked about for a long time both in the world of sports and social media until the first kick off of the 2012 season.
This really goes to show how fast word travels with the power of social networking sites. These days everyone has an opinion about everything and most likely they are going to post it onto the Internet. In the world of sports, social networking has become a huge part of their fan base and how they stay in the news. It is a great way for fans and players to connect. During the NCAA tournament there are even coaches that tweet during half time about their team and the current game that they are playing. Never has that happened before when it comes to sports. To me I feel like this is just the beginning with the influence that twitter is going to have on sports. Twitter has become a faster news source than ESPN and as long as people keep tweeting this will be going on for quite a while.

Former Saint Jeremy Shockey denies snitching on team, blasts Warren Sapp
A Twitter battle has been brewing this week between former Saint's player Jermey Shockey and NFL analyst Warren Snap. Snap is accusing, more like called out Shockey as the "snitch" in the Saint's bounty scandal. There has been many tweets from both parties. Warren Snap claims that his source who leaked the information to him is very reliable and he has no doubt that his source is correct. Jermey Shockey fiercely defends himself over twitter and even says he will take a polygraph test in order to prove he wasn't the source. The National Football LEague has come to a decision on the bounty scandal and has punished the Saint's very severely for the actions of its player. Another issue not only for the Saint's but for the League as well is this issue of players and fans and analysts firing out over twitter. Twitter allows no protection for people in midst of a scandal and the league is not sure how to handle battles over twitter. One could also think of the point that in a matter as serious as the Saint's were facing, should people have made comments about who made have put the Saint's in that position in the first place? Twitter is a very useful and popular site, can tend to do more harm than good when it comes to speaking out on matters of punishment and scandal.
NCAA Bracketology: The Science Behind March Madness(Article)
By Matt Lewis
For sports fans everywhere, March means time for The NCAA Basketball Tournament or March Madness. Everyone from the secretary at the office, to the President of The United States fills out a bracket in hopes of either cashing in an office pool, or obtaining exclusive bragging rights among friends. But how do you pick the winners? Many novices will go with anything from the sound of the school's name to how much they like the color of a team's uniform. Many experts will pick the hot teams on the biggest winning streaks. However, lately science has also played a big role. For example, examining a team's RPI or Ratings Percentage Index, which is a formula for rating teams based on wins, losses, and strength of schedule. This article also talks about the LRMC system, which stands for logic regression/Markov chain. This system covers wins, losses, schedule, and how home court advantage played a factor in those wins. Many people play the odds as well. For instance, a number 16 seed has never beaten a number 1. However you choose your method, your odds of picking a perfect bracket are worse than one in a 150 million. No wonder they call it bracketology.
The Major League Baseball Network has increased the role that social media plays on their programs and has incorporated 108-inch touch screens for the MLB Network hosts to use when they’re on air. As illustrated by Natan Edelsburg on SportsMedia.com, “The social area of the studio serves up 108-inch touch screens for MLB Network talent to interact with fans through Facebook polls, Twitter, and email.” The new social media area will allow fans to interact with the network talent and guests while the show is being aired. Fans will also receive live updates of information like trades and developing stories that show up on the screens. This new development that the MLB network has introduced is important because it includes their audience more into their programs and shows the fans that their input is valued.

Pinsanity: How Sports Teams Are Winning on Pintrest ArticleBy: Jaclyn Ramos
Pintrest has been quickly gaining popularity in the social media world, and sports teams are beginning to take advantage of pintrest to connect with more fans. Pintrest can offer sports teams a new way to engage with and reward fans from a different social platform. Teams from the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL have started using pintrest recently. Due to pintrest’s large female use, sports teams are finding new ways to connect with different demographics. Teams are able to “showcase content from fans, display merchandise, create boards of photos from the past and present, and reflect team-associated culture and lifestyle trends.” This new trend in pintrest will likely gain more attention from sports teams and fans as the popularity of this new social platform continues to grow.
