NFL Player Promoters Will Help NFL Dominate Social Media(Article)By: Jaclyn Ramos
The NFL is looking to take over social media with new “NFL Promoters.” The NFL already has an extremely large fan base with over 4.6 million Facebook fans and 2.8 million Twitter followers. This doesn’t even include individual players social media fan bases. United Way is looking for social media interns to drive traffic to NFL player’s social media accounts, which will lend United Way exposure as well. These social media interns will be called player promoters rather than interns since they will in fact be actually promoting individual players. United Way has been in partnership with the NFL for 39 years and is the dominant non-profit organization of the league. On top of taking on interns, many athletes such as Greg Jennings and Roman Harper have agreed to recruit United Way volunteers in hopes of reducing the high school dropout rate.
I found this article to be especially interesting as United Way is promoting the NFL as well as education. This is an internship that appeals to the type of work I am intrigued by. United Way player promoters, or interns, will develop creative social media strategies for their NFL player’s audience as well as write articles about their player’s effort to recruit high school volunteers.
MSG Scores, Thanks to "Lin-sanity"Written by: Lauren Frahm
The newest athlete to take the top spot on sports news is no other than the New York Knicks’ point guard, Jeremy Lin. Surprising to all, but Lin, once a “benchwarmer”, has broken out and stolen the show, leading the team to 7 straight victories. You may also know him as “Lin-sanity”.
MSG (Madison Square Garden), a TV network that primarily reports on New York City teams has received an immense increase in ratings in accordance with Jeremy Lin’s outstanding game performances. Since Lin has been starting for the New York Knicks, MSG’s ratings have made a dramatic increase of 70%. Time Warner Cable, who triumphs over the cable industry in New York, has hit a slump as they fight with MSG over an increase in rates. This battle has led to the black out of many sports games to Time Warner customers, most importantly including the New York Knicks. Last Saturday night, thanks to Lin, MSG received a 4.17 Nielson household rating, beating their highest rated game record for the Knicks (Dougherty). This blackout, although unfortunate for Time Warner, has been tremendously beneficial for MSG at this time. Both companies report that although MSG has made numerous proposals to end this dispute, Time Warner is not budging to MSG's wanted 53% rate increase in what Time Warner pays for programming(Associated Press). Until this dispute comes to an end, Knicks fans and many other New York sports fans that subscribe to Time Warner will have to find an alternate way of watching their teams in action
New Contestants, New Format in Slam Dunk Contest (Article)
By Matt Lewis
This year's NBA Slam Dunk Contest which takes place the day before the all star game, will lack some of the star power typically seen in years past. Last year Clippers Forward Blake Griffin wowed everyone by jumping over a car for the slam that would win him the title, and recognition as being the best dunker in the league. However, this year star's like Griffin, Dwight Howard, and LeBron James have decided to skip the contest, forcing the NBA to find others to fill the once sought after slots in the contest and also change the format in order to not lose it's audience. This years contest will only be one round and will not feature judges to decide the winner. Instead, fans will pick the winner by either voting online, texting, or tweeting who they think had the best dunks of the night. Hopefully including this fan interaction will be enough to keep their viewing audience satisfied while lacking the star power.
The beginning of the NBA season got off to a rocky start and after the lockout not a lot of people knew how the season would turn out. But with the fan's love for basketball and the rising sensation of Jeremy Lin in New York the NBA has been flourishing since the lockout ended. Both viewership and attendance has been rising. Since last season ESPN has been up 21 percent, TNT has been up 24 percent, ABC has been up 10 percent and NBA TV has been up 57 percent. Something else that has been getting more attention from the NBA is facebook and twitter. 345 NBA players are currently using Twitter and the fan interactions have been the most popular in years. Youtube is also seeing a lot of traffic making the NBA the most popular sports on youtube right now. Finally, NBA.com has record breaking traffic, page views are up 30 percent from last season. This is really important in the world of social media and television. The NBA has been having a huge impact on the way we interact with the sport and its players. With it being so easy to connect to players i think that this will only start to become more common between athlete and fan.
'Baseball Boyfriend' App Lets You 'Date' The Players (Article)
By Britta Erickson
While browsing the Mashable website the other day I came across this article about a new baseball app. This app is based off of the popular trend of fantasy sports. Usually with these fantasy games, you draft your dream team of players and are rewarded points for their positive stats while playing against your peers. This new app is geared towards the female demographic. It is supposed to combine the regular fantasy games with teenage-like crushes. You pick one player and "date him" as long as you would like while you also get points for his stats. The creators of this app have teamed up with CBS Sports and generating a lot of hype for the app due to this partnership.
Many have scrutinized the app, calling it sexist and demeaning towards women. This is also not the first sports media organization to be called sexist. ESPN's website came under attack recently for having an option on their site where visitors could complain about female commentators specifically ("commentator — dislike female commentators"). This ability was finally taken down a few days ago.
The reason I chose to share this article was not only because I found it interesting, but it also shows how sports media is attempting to reach and cater to a larger demographic. This will, in the long run, make them more money. Sports leagues and media are finally starting to realize that women are an important and growing part of their fan-base and can be very profitable. CBS Sports creating a partnership with BBBF is a perfect example of this realization. Although some people find this BBBF app to be sexist, I find it amusing. If the situation was reversed and it was a women's softball girlfriend app, no one would complain about it. If you do not agree with the app, do not download it. Plus, it was co-created by a husband and wife who made it for women they know, not a profit. As for the ESPN controversy, I find that highly offensive and am glad that they took that feature down. Women are, and always will be, a major part of the sports industry and should be treated with respect and as an equal fan.
The Internet is making it easier for amateurs to display their work and compete with professional sports photography. While professional sports photographers are given special media access to capture the “moment” in a game, a photo taken from a fan sitting in the bleachers can gain just as much attention. SportsNetworker.com author Thomas van Schaik discusses two ways to get ahead in his article “Social Media Changes Sports Photography,” "...be the first or be the best” (Schaik 1). The Internet is allowing society to be the first to get their photos up and compete for views even if they’re not the best. Some may argue that the quality and resolution of photos are no longer as important as the amount of people who are viewing these images. This change in sports media is worthy of noting because it changes the profession of sports photography and the attention that it gets from around the world.

Jeremy Lin a rising star in the NBA
By: Kaitlyn Garcia
Jeremy Lin has ignited a craze in the NBA over the last 2 weeks. Someone who was seemingly unknown a month ago is know the hottest thing since the Chris Paul trade to go down in basketball during this season. Jeremy now has several endorsements and even a potential shoe coming out with his name on it. Jeremy has also been put on the the NBA's rising star list. Jeremy a perfect example of how the media can blow up something to huge heights. Jeremy has been under such media spotlight the past two weeks, since he was only added to the New York Knicks not too long ago and it wasn't till his big play for the knocks to help them win, did he finally get himself recognized not only by the franchise but by the flashing light bulbs of the media as well. The media has turned Lin into such a big sports star that there is even a huge Lin craze over him in China and Europe and Canada. Will Lin continue to ride the media train or will this just be his quick 15 minutes of fame? One may never know because the media is so unperdictable.
How Much Do Sports Fans Love Social Media?
By: Ashley McNutt
Sports and social media go hand in hand. As we have learned in class, sports are things that need to be watched live, and are rarely recorded to re-watch at a later date ot time. We want to know what is happening now in sports, and not wait for results later- we want to be in the action. This is why social media and sports go so hand in hand together.GMR Marketing came up with a study to determine the results on how much people use social media to connect to sports. Turns out, people are TEN times more to check the internet for sports updates than tune into sports radio. 41% of people use Facebook compared to 40% who use Twitter for their updates, while only 13% of the public use the TV for their breaking sports news, and 4% tune into the radio. These statistics shown here really prove just how important social media is in sports. I mean think about it, we get social media on our mobile devices, IPads, computers, you name it. In this day and age, people are constantly on their Facebooks and Twitters checking updates, and it doesn't matter where they are for this: they can be at dinner, on a date, watching TV, eating, etc.
I chose to share this article because this is what the future holds. Social media is a powerful thing and is showing to be taking television and radio's place. I know for a fact that I am always on some social media or internet site looking for news on breaking things- especially sports. When I am unable to watch the Chargers game, I pull up my Facebook feed and watch for updates on the game. This gives me everything I need and does it quickly. When you tune into the radio or television, you are forced to sit through some things until you hear what you want to hear. You aren't even guaranteed to hear the information you want to know. It is just so much more convenient to be on a social media or internet site, and able to choose the information you want to see. Convenience is key!
