Since social media has become such an important aspect of our society, many industries have jumped on the bandwagon. Major league sports in particular have used it as a way to build their fan bases and improve their brand. This article, done by TIME magazine, discusses how sports use social media, focusing on the NFL and the MLB. Basically, fans are able to get up to the second information about their favorite teams, while these sports franchises are capitalizing on it with mobile apps and other new broadcasting mediums. The NFL has really utililzed Facebook and the league has even generated over 4 million fans. The MLB, on the other hand, was late to give in to social media, but is now flourishing thanks to their creation of "The Fan Cave."

I chose this article because I thought it gave a great account of how some of the biggest sports leagues and teams in our country are getting on board with these newer broadcasting forums. Many sports fans, including myself, use mediums like Twitter and Facebook to talk about their favorite teams and more importantly get up to the second information about those teams and game results. Social Media is definitely a great way to keep up with your teams and even interact with them.

New Fantasy Football Game with a Million Dollar Prize!By: Marissa Green

Some of the best parts about football season is of course fantasy football. It is a way for fans to get more involved with the game that they love so much. But recently it has been introduced that during the Super Bowl an ad will be run to promote the "Perfect Challenge." The article states that it each week the people participating must choose an eight player fantasy line-up. There are exact specifics to what the team needs to entail but ultimately if each one of their selections over that week earns the most fantasy points then the prize is given to them at 1 million dollars. Although, it may be a lot of money for winning some fantasy football, from a football perspective I think it is a great way to get more fans involved. You don't even have to know a lot about the game and the players of the NFL but ultimately what the NFL is trying to do is get more fans of all ages and backgrounds involved in America's favorite game. Hopefully coming from this game people will be more interested in just their teams and learn to love the game of football, thus getting more involved via merchandise, facebook and twitter. We live in an age now where it is so easy to be connected to your favorite sports players, you can be up to speed on their every move.I chose this article because I love fantasy football, it gives you something to look forward to every week and it is a great way to connect with your friends that share the same interests. I think this is going to be a great way to get people more involved with the sport of football and not to mention that their is a great incentive at the end.

This past Monday night Los Angeles Clippers' Blake Griffin swept the social media scene with reactions to what everyone is referring to as the "Dunk of the Year" on Oklahoma City Thunder's center, Kendrick Perkins. Twitter ,alone, broke out into a frenzy with excitement over Griffin's remarkable dunk, but it wasn't just Twitter; every sports news report from ESPN, to the Huffington Post, to the Bleacher Report, to Fox News, to Facebook, exploded with replays, reactions, and stories of the play. It took over the sports world Monday night and it still takes a top spot on sports news and social media outlets. It has been reported that due to the immense amount of tweets on this topic, Perkins actually deleted his Twitter and Facebook account in attempt to relieve the pressure it has placed upon him. With social media playing such a vital role in lives today and especially in the sports world, escaping from the reality of this play isn't very easy to do. There is a constant reminder in every media outlet and thanks to Youtube you can rewatch this play time and time again. This play has received a remarkable amount of media coverage, mostly positive feedback and appreciation for it, but there will always be a rebuttle. Kevin Durant a star player for the Thunder, argues that Griffin's dunk was nothing but a lay up and is simply not impressed by it.Despite if this play can be considered the "Dunk of the Year", the "Dunk of the Decade" or merely a lay up mistaken for a dunk, Blake Griffin is an incredible NBA star who is constantly on the rise. He is being compared to NBA all stars and is always in the spotlight of the sports media and social media world, maintaining a top spot on Twitter's trending topics before, and certainly after this play. He is positively someone to look out for as he constantly brings his "A" game.

Social media in the world of sports is growing rapidly. Sports enthusiasts are able to interact with pro athletes, fellow fans and rivals from the comfort of their home, or mobile devices. Sports-centered social apps are growing immensely every day. PlayUp is a mobile app that allows users to publicly or privately debate and discuss sports games in chat groups. Fordham Athletics have just teamed up with PlayUp due to the growing popularity between sports and social media. PlayUp is just one example of this growing field. Professional athletes are some of the most followed users on Twitter. Fans are now able to connect with their favorite pro athletes outside of just reading due to the variety of media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare. This new trend of being able to “follow” your favorite athletes will not be slowing down any time soon. In fact, the sports social media world will only continue growing as the late majority of users adopt these new trends in sports. You can guarantee that social media outlets will be overflowing this Sunday with all things Super Bowl related. Also, the NFL has its own Social Media Command Center for this Sunday’s big game. Nike has developed a new technology that helps athletes improve their vision on the field with the creation of the Vapor Strobe eyewear, which are LCD goggles that can cloud over on demand. This new technology allows athletes in sports like football to zone out all of the confusion and clutter that occurs on every snap and focus more on their targets. Several professional athletes and to vouch for the Vapor Strobe including Oregon football coach, Chip Kelly, who told reporter Tim Newcomb, “It is like a weighted bat to develop better hand-eye coordination, but much better.” The price on the eyewear is currently listed at $300 on Nike’s website, and can be used to improve athlete’s skills in various sports. Innovations such as these are important because it allows athletes to develop theirccuracy, make decisions faster, and increase the level of competition of the sport that they’re playing.

Normally, when we think of the NFL, we think of modern NFL football. We think about how this coming Sunday, February 5, 2012, is the Super Bowl, and Tom Brady and the New England Patriots will take on Eli Manning and the New York Giants. But have you ever thought about what NFL football is going to be like in about 10 years? I sure hadn't. Author Bill Reiter discusses how he thinks that future changes in the league will be from technological advances in media. Technology is already growing in the sport, as Reiter states there are now digitalized films showing all plays from any game of choice from all angles looking almost like a video game; when fouls are "close calls" in a game, there is revolutionized technology for one to see precisely where the ball went or if a certain player really did cause a penalty. As we know, it is hard to see what the world will be like in 2020, since technology grows quickly each and every day. Twitter and other social media sites are rapidly growing in the NFL; with this year being the first year for the Pro Bowl to have tweeting stations set up where players tweeted through the whole game. This is a start for the players who eventually want to interact with fans on a normal basis. What better way to accomplish this than through social media? Reiter even mentions the idea of the future of NFL implementing chips into footballs to where the chips would alert the balls went pass the goal line. The coolest thing is the mention of live digital data of the players. Like a video game, but live, one can zoom in on the players digitally as the game is going on. Crazy, right? Technology is making the impossible possible each and every day.

I chose this article because I was very interested in what would be predicted to be so different in 2020 when it comes to NFL football. I enjoyed reading how different technology and media were predicted to heavily influence the way the game is played. It was interesting to see how Twitter came into play at the ProBowl, and how bystanders could read live feed from the players while they were playing the game- nuts! The ideas about technological inventions were cool and kind of out of this world, but I liked how technology was the thing to help create a better league, as we are only at the beginning of limited possibilities in this sport.

During the recent Pro Bowl in Hawaii, NFL players were encouraged to tweet from the sidelines. Current NFL rules during the regular season and playoffs prohibit players from tweeting from 90 minutes before kickoff until their post game media obligations are complete. Many players have been disciplined for violating these twitter policies which also include posting content that can be seen as harmful to the league or other players. However, since the Pro Bowl is a more relaxed kind of exhibition game, the NFL allowed players to connect with fans via twitter during the game. The NFL sees this as a chance to help America's most popular sport grow even further, with the help of social media.

Players and Press Conferences

In these days of constant media, one comment, even though not meant to harm, can be taken as offensive. NFL quarterback Tom Brady has been under strict scrutiny, especially since football's biggest game is coming up on Sunday. All of the press conferences and media tours as well as the practicing for the big game leads to a very high percent chance that some player will say a comment that will go viral by the media and not in a good way. The media has the ability to take a touching store about a father supporting his rising star of a son, into a star player dissing the state of hotels rooms in Buffalo, New York. The media is so instantaneous today there is a much larger margin of error for player and coaches and celebrities to make statements that can be misconstrued by the media. The media is such a powerful force that during live press conference one has to be very careful in what they say and how they say.
